My primary thing these days is Angel Investing and advising some of these companies on their online marketing strategy.
I am also a mentor (and investor) at The Rattle, a co-working/start-up hub focussed on the music industry.
Along side this I have a small portfolio of content sites that pay my bills and keep my eye in on the online marketing side of things - never trust a cook that will not eat their own food after all!
I started out in consulting back in the heady dot-com days of the late 1990s. I got thrown in at the deep-end with many weird and wonderful projects and learned a lot, very quickly.
After that particular bubble went pfffft, I found myself back in London with a redundancy cheque and nothing much else to do. So I built up a ringtones company and a property portfolio, before going back into consulting...and discovered I hated it! Those dot com days really spoiled me.
I then got into online marketing and became part of a small agency formed with some university friends. I wasn't that gone on agency work (clients!) but it did introduce me to several start-ups that needed investment and some help with their online presence. I found it a much better solution to advise companies that I was a part-owner of rather than the agency model...and some investments have done really well, so I won't pretend it is all altruistic!
So I left the agency world behind me and I am now an Angel Investor and advisor to some of the companies I invest in. I am also a mentor (and investor) at The Rattle, a co-working/start-up hub focussed on the music industry.
